KredEx will launch a publicity campaign concerning energy conservation

12.10.2007
Beginning from Monday, KredEx Energy Efficiency Consulting Centre (ESK) will carry out a two-week publicity campaign concerning energy efficiency "How to save on heating expenses?" The main goal of the campaign is to increase the awareness of people living in apartment buildings concerning energy efficiency, drawing their attention to the fact that by renovating an apartment building one can significantly lower the heating expenses.

Estonian buildings are mostly energetically inefficient. In our apartment buildings the annual average heat requirements are 200-400 kWh/m². In developed industrial countries with similar climate the number is smaller almost by half. Consequently we consume energy and pay for it significantly more. 75% of our housing fund is made up of multi-storied apartment buildings where 75% of the population live. In a situation where the cost of energy carriers is continuously increasing, the main effort should be directed towards improving the energy consumption and technical condition of houses, and the physical living environment (also interior climate) of the people.

"Considering the fact that the heating and building costs are gradually increasing, it would be sensible to insulate houses and review the condition of heating systems. It would probably increase the inhabitants' tax burden at first, but would definitely be profitable in the long run", said Mirja Adler, the head of the KredEx division of housing products.

The reinforced concrete outer wall of an ordinary apartment building from the Soviet times was built according to the building norms of these days, which were lower compared to the present ones. The building solutions of these houses do not correspond to the current demands. The heat-retention of a typical panel building is almost five times lower that the current norms demand. However, increasing the inner temperature by 1° C, increases heating expenses approx. 5%.

Energy Efficiency Consulting Centre founded by KredEx is dealing with publicity activities concerning energy efficiency since year 2006. The Consulting Centre was established in co-operation with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications with the goal to share free information with the inhabitants of apartment buildings concerning energy efficiency and to create a suitable environment in Estonia to improve the energy efficiency of houses.

Besides printed materials, outdoor, TV and radio advertising within the publicity campaign, the issue of energy efficient renovation of apartment buildings will also be touched upon in five consecutive programmes of "Nurgakivi" (TV3). The first programme will be broadcasted on October 13th. During the campaign seminars concerning energy conservation will be carried out in Estonian towns.
